The Fisheries Division within the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Blue and Green Economy joins the international community in observing World Ocean Day 2026 under the theme, “REIMAGINE: Beyond the World We Know, A New Relationship with Our Ocean.”
This year’s theme serves as a powerful call to action, encouraging individuals, communities, industries, and governments to rethink their relationship with the ocean and embrace innovative, sustainable approaches to its stewardship and protection.
As a Small Island Developing State, Dominica’s social, cultural, environmental, and economic well-being is closely intertwined with the health of its marine environment. The ocean sustains livelihoods, supports food security, drives economic activity through fisheries and marine tourism, and provides essential ecosystem services that protect coastal communities and preserve biodiversity.
The Ministry recognizes that safeguarding the ocean requires collective action and a renewed commitment to sustainable practices. Reimagining our relationship with the ocean means promoting responsible fisheries management, reducing marine pollution, conserving marine ecosystems, strengthening climate resilience, and investing in the sustainable development of the blue economy.
Through the Fisheries Division, the Ministry continues to implement policies, programmes, and initiatives aimed at ensuring the sustainable use of Dominica’s marine resources. These efforts are supported through collaboration with fishers, coastal communities, regional and international partners, non-governmental organizations, and other stakeholders who share a common vision for healthy and productive oceans.
On this World Ocean Day, the Ministry encourages all citizens to play an active role in protecting the marine environment. Simple yet meaningful actions such as reducing plastic waste, participating in coastal clean-up activities, supporting sustainable seafood practices, and respecting marine protected areas can contribute significantly to the preservation of our ocean resources. The future of our ocean depends on the choices we make today. By reimagining our relationship with the sea, we can build a future where both people and marine ecosystems thrive together through sustainability, innovation, and shared responsibility.
