These are the terms for reading this site, for commenting on it, and for reusing what we publish.
Who we are
The company that publishes this site has not published its legal name here yet, so this page cannot name it. “We” and “us” mean whoever publishes this site; “you” means anyone using the site.
Using the site
Reading is free and needs no account. You agree not to interfere with the site, not to attempt to reach parts of it you have not been given access to, and not to use automated means to copy it. How automated agents may use the site is set out in robots.txt, which is a policy we enforce rather than a suggestion.
Your account
- There is no password. You sign in with a single-use link sent to your address, which expires after 15 minutes.
- One account per email address. You are responsible for activity on your account.
- No age check runs when you ask for an account, and this page does not name a minimum age. We close accounts that break these terms, and if you believe a child has given us personal data, tell us at the address at the foot of this page and we will remove it.
- An administrator may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms, and you may close your own at any time from your account page.
Commenting
Commenting is available only when we enable it. Where it is available, new comments may wait for a moderator before they appear — so do not post something twice because it has not shown up yet. We may close commenting or decline a comment at our discretion.
Do not post anything that:
- is unlawful, defamatory, or harasses or threatens anyone;
- is hateful about a person or group, or reveals private information about them;
- is advertising, spam, or repeated across stories;
- impersonates someone else, including our journalists.
When you post a comment you keep the copyright in it, and you give us permission to publish, keep and display it on the site and in the archive, and to quote it in our journalism with attribution. That permission lasts as long as the comment is published. Removing a comment does not remove it from a backup taken while it was live.
Our journalism
Everything we publish — text, photographs, video and the site’s design — belongs to us or to the people who licensed it to us. You may quote from a story with a link back to the original, and share links freely. You may not republish a story in full, sell it, or use the archive to train a model without written permission.
Corrections
We correct mistakes in public. Every published version is receipted, so a change to a published story stays visible in its version history, and corrections are listed on the corrections page. If something here is wrong, tell us at the address at the foot of this page.
Availability
The site is provided as it is. We do not promise it will be available without interruption or free of errors, and we may change or withdraw any part of it.
Liability
Nothing in these terms limits liability where the law does not allow it — including for death, personal injury or fraud. Subject to that, we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss arising from your use of the site. This page does not put a figure on our total liability, so it does not cap it beyond what the law already does.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms; the date at the top of the page changes when we do. Continuing to use the site after a change means accepting it.
Which law applies
This page does not name the law that governs these terms, so the ordinary rules about which country’s law applies to a site like this one are the ones that do.
This page does not name the courts that would hear a dispute, so the ordinary rules about where a claim may be brought are the ones that apply.
If you are a consumer, nothing here removes protections you have where you live.
