The Pesticide Control Board within the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Blue and Green Economy joins the international community in observing Pesticide Awareness Day on Monday, September 28, 2026, with a renewed focus on reducing the risks associated with the use of Highly Hazardous Pesticides (HHPs).
The observance highlights the importance of safe pesticide handling and responsible use, not only within agriculture, and the farming communities but also in households, businesses and other sectors where pesticides are used.
The Ministry is encouraging farmers to explore safer and more sustainable approaches, including Integrated Pest Management (IPM), which promotes the use of a combination of methods to manage pests while reducing reliance on chemical pesticides.
Food security remains a priority for Dominica, and producing safe, wholesome food is an important part of achieving this goal. The Ministry continues to work with farmers, importers, retailers and other stakeholders involved in pesticide management to strengthen awareness, promote responsible pesticide use and provide training on safer alternatives and practices.
As part of efforts to protect consumers and support the production of safe food, the Ministry also continues its collaboration with the Dominica Bureau of Standards to conduct periodic testing of fresh produce for pesticide residues. These tests help determine whether residue levels remain within established Maximum Residue Levels (MRLs) for safe consumption and support compliance for export markets.
