The Fisheries Division of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Blue and Green Economy will commemorate Soufriere Scotts Head Marine Reserve (SSMR) Day 2026 on Thursday, June 25, 2026, under the theme: “Strong Marine Protected Areas for Our Blue Planet.”
SSMR Day is a flagship activity of the Fisheries Division and has been celebrated annually since its inception on June 5, 1994, at Scotts Head with a short break post Hurricane Maria. The observance serves as an important platform for raising awareness of Dominica’s valuable marine resources and the role that individuals and communities play in protecting them for future generations.
SSMR Day will include primary school presentations, radio programmes, and preparations for a secondary school inter-school debate. These awareness and educational activities are designed to engage young people and the wider public in marine conservation and sustainable environmental practices. All activities will culminate with the SSMR Day awards ceremony on June 25, 2026.
The programme will be implemented through a collaborative effort involving staff of the Fisheries Division and the Local Area Management Authority (LAMA), with support from watersports operators and other stakeholders within the Soufriere-Scotts Head community. Preparations include educational outreach, public awareness initiatives among other activities.
As Dominica continues to advance sustainable ocean management, SSMR Day 2026 highlights the importance of strong and effective marine protected areas in safeguarding biodiversity, supporting livelihoods, and building resilience against environmental challenges.
