U.S. speaker and artificial intelligence expert James LeMay recently engaged faculty and students at the University of Guyana in discussions focused on the growing role of artificial intelligence in higher education and journalism.
During a roundtable session with faculty from the Center of Communication Studies and the Department of Computer Science, LeMay explored opportunities for integrating AI into academic programmes. Discussions highlighted areas where U.S. expertise and resources could support curriculum development, while emphasizing best practices in AI ethics, media literacy, and responsible technology use.
LeMay also delivered a guest lecture to Communication Studies students, examining both the practical and ethical implications of AI in journalism. Topics included the use of AI for fact-checking, detecting deepfakes, addressing bias in AI-generated content, and ensuring transparency and accountability in AI-powered reporting.
Students were also encouraged to consider how artificial intelligence is reshaping media careers and the skills future communicators will need to remain competitive, credible, and adaptable in a rapidly evolving industry.
