The Caribbean is mourning the passing of legendary calypso icon Slinger Francisco, widely known as The Mighty Sparrow, who died on Sunday in New York at the age of 91.
Born in Grenada and raised in Trinidad and Tobago, Sparrow became one of the Caribbean’s most influential cultural figures. Known as the “Calypso King of the World,” his music captured Caribbean life through humour, social commentary, politics, romance and everyday experiences.
Tributes have been pouring in from across the region.
Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar remembered Sparrow as a patriot and cultural ambassador whose music carried the stories and spirit of the country around the world.
Barbados Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley described Sparrow as an important part of Caribbean civilization, saying simply, “He belonged to all of us.”
Saint Lucia Opposition Leader Allen Chastanet also paid tribute, remembering Sparrow for giving Caribbean people stories, laughter and a voice they could recognize as their own.
While the legendary “Birdie” has taken his final flight, his music and contribution to Caribbean culture will live on for generations.
