Twelve people, including a pilot and 11 skydivers, were killed after a private aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff near Butler Memorial Airport in Missouri on Sunday. Authorities said the aircraft failed to gain sufficient altitude before going down approximately 300 yards from the runway.
The aircraft, a Pacific Aerospace P750XL operated by Skydive Kansas City, reportedly experienced difficulties moments after departure. Witnesses said the pilot appeared to be attempting an emergency landing before the plane crashed and burst into flames.
Family members of some of those on board reportedly witnessed the tragic accident. Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene, but all 12 occupants were pronounced dead.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), and Missouri State Highway Patrol have launched an investigation into the cause of the crash. Officials say a final report could take months to complete.
The tragedy has sent shockwaves through the skydiving community, with Skydive Kansas City expressing its condolences to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives.
